Parents are infuriated over a school district’s decision to only issue a verbal warning to a teacher who described a student as an “evolutionary link between orangutans and humans” on Facebook. An attorney for the child’s mother said Tuesday the Manatee County School District responded with a “mere slap on the wrist.” She wants the teacher to be fired or suspended without pay.
Music teacher Lauren Orban at Rogers Garden Elementary School identified the 8-year-old boy by his initials in her comments online. Orban was given a verbal warning, which does not go into her personnel file. The superintendent of the district has provided information about Orban’s conduct to the state Department of Education. Officials could decide whether or not to revoke her teaching license.
