In Ulster County, NY, cyberbullying is being taken seriously. On Tuesday, January 9, 2016, a new local law was proposed in Ulster County, NY to protect against cyberbullying, the act of intentionally inflicting emotional harm via technology.

The new law, not yet enacted, proposed by Ulster County Executive Mike Hein would charge cyberbullies found guilty with a misdemeanor, up to a $1,000 fine, and/or time in jail. The view of supporters is that it could help in protecting against the dangers of cyberbullying, which have led and continue to sometimes lead to death of victims. Opposers hold that it may interfere with freedom of speech.
