Jackie Waite, wife of Australian football player Jarrad Waite, stated that the abuse directed at players and their wives is now “out of control” and puts many high-profile marriages under strain. She says that she has faced vicious online attacks on everything from her appearance to her husband’s performance on the field since setting up a Twitter profile only 13 weeksago. She believes the hurtful comments have lowered her confidence and made her question remaining in the spotlight. Waite feels that Twitter has to be more accountable for the actions of its users by shutting down profiles and issuing warnings. The online community is supportive of Waite in her quest to instill a moral compass among Twitter users.
