Although many states in the United States have laws against cyberbullying, Colorado does not have any specific criminal code which addresses the issue.
The recent stories of tragedies regarding cyberbullying in other states, especially the stories of teen victims, have worried the lawmakers into action.
“It just hurts me to see the headlines about far too many kids who are harmed and intimidated and threatened by what they see on Facebook or texting,” commented Rhonda Fields (D-Aurora), who introduced the legislation. Another introducer, Representative Amy Stephens (R-Colorado Springs), declared “lives are at stake.”
The proposed bill will label actions, such as posting nude pictures, felonies, and will prompt investigations. This law will also bring Colorado’s laws up to date with the world where people’s lives are becoming more immersed on the Internet.
“As a state we need to be doing all that’s possible to protect our most precious resources– that’s our kids,” said Fields.
